The community spirit of Newham has always filled me with pride. No matter the cause or where it began; if it was local, it was supported. Now there is a new hub for the community to sink its teeth into.

Applecart Arts recently moved from Plaistow to the beautiful, grade 2 listed building in Plashet Park. Formerly a library and registry office, it now holds multiple theatre spaces, an exhibition hall and a dedicated in-house cafe/bar.

Applecarts was started as a place to tell stories and inspired by what could be achieved when groups came together to talk and listen.

We are influenced by storytelling and how it can challenge, change and strengthen society. Through this we hope to celebrate diversity and encourage cohesion in our community.

While we await the final renovations on the rest of the building, the cafe has been doing a roaring trade with homemade soups and baked goods. Inclusivity and choice have become our watch words with a ‘build it yourself’ menu designed to allow customers to enjoy their perfect breakfast/lunch. All items come with vegan and halal options, including the pastries! This paired with our artisan coffee (supplied by Redemption Roasters) turns us into the perfect little spot to meet friends or complete work away from the office.

Our interest in community needs was further shown when mum groups asked for toddler sessions to be set up and by the next week we were testing our Tots and Tales group which has become such a success that it’s now a permanent fixture.

If you’re looking for a more adult vibe then come down in the evening for wine and cheese. Try your knowledge at our pub quiz or else sit back and enjoy some live jazz. Most events are ‘pay what you can’ so check our website before spending even more on a night out in town.

If you want to participate further give us a shout, we run a swap library out of the cafe so bring down any old books and see if any of ours take your fancy. If you’re a creator yourself we’d love to help sell your products. We currently stock everything from jams to jewellery, all made locally!
